Typical Design and Construction Process

The process starts with a consultation where the parameters of the project are discussed. After the consultation, we will undertake designing the project based on the clients needs. The design may encompass the entire property or just a very specific portion, such as a patio, wall or front entrance. Design usually involves outdoor living spaces which include all plantings and various structures such as: pergolas, gates, gazebos and fencing. Other features include: ponds, waterfalls, and pools. Design may also provide solutions for site circulation problems, grading and drainage.

When the design process is complete we will estimate the project, present and sign contract documents, and then schedule the project to be constructed. It is important to note that the work is scheduled in the order that it comes in. We work on each job until completion then go on to the next.

When starting a new job, the hardscape construction comes first (patios, steps, walls and lighting etc.). Lighting is almost always done with a patio or retaining wall so we incorporate it right into the structure. Softscape, such as landscape planting and lawn installation, comes last. We may also recommend an Irrigation System because it helps to support our client’s investment. Irrigation is installed prior to all planting except for existing lawns.

Because of the substantial investment required, many people choose to phase the project. For example, they may choose to construct the hardscape, then at a later time, install plantings, irrigation and lawn areas. Phasing primarily occurs when the project involves designing or re-designing the entire property. We may construct all of the landscaping in the back yard one year and then construct the front yard one or two years later.
